Overview

course-thumbnailWe are delighted to host our autumn Northeast AAC Summit in beautiful Rochester, New York! This full day in-person event will focus on AAC and Literacy with guest speakers, time for hands on exploration and a panel discussion.


Learning Outcomes: 

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 3 strategies for integration of AAC and literacy at the preschool level.
  2. Discuss 3 strategies for integration of AAC and literacy at the school aged level.
  3. Identify 2 resources for implementation of AAC and literacy. 
  4. Explain 3 common barriers to implementation of literacy in AAC population. 
  5. Name 3 strategies to overcoming barriers to implementation of literacy in AAC populations. 

 

Time Ordered Agenda:

15 minutes: Introduction

75 minutes: Preschool Spotlight: Using Language to Anchor Literacy.

75 minutes:  Breakout Sessions focusing on hands on literacy implementation stations.

75 minutes: Literacy Spotlight for School Aged Populations.

60 minutes: Panel discussion: Literacy and AAC implementation: barriers and solutions.

Guest Preschool session presenters:

Grace Keegan, M.S. CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist who works at Monroe 2 Orleans BOCES from 2020, primarily in their special education preschool settings. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Nazareth College of Rochester. She has a special interest in working with students who use AAC devices and other complex communication needs.

Laura McNally, MS. Special Education B-6, has been an educator for 15 years, spending the last seven years working at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES as a special education preschool teacher.  Over the last several years, Laura has placed a strong focus on literacy and language in her instruction, immersing students in varied opportunities to play, learn and grow.  Laura attributes student success to the collaborative atmosphere and high expectations her SLP and classroom team strive for and values the resources BOCES 2 is able to provide to her students (Assistive Technology, AAC devices, direct consult support by providers, etc.).

Leigh Nenni, M.S., CCC-SLP has been employed with Monroe2-Orleans BOCES since 1984. Through 1990, Leigh provided speech and language therapy services to students enrolled in the BOCES early intervention program in school age programs. During that time, Leigh recognized the power of AT and AAC, and help to develop and oversee the BOCES2 Assistive Technology Services Department, and AT lending library program Today, Leigh works as an assistive technology consultant, providing coaching services and training to students, school personnel and families. Outside of work, Leigh enjoys time with her family and friends, reading, and being outdoors in the sunshine!

Guest School Age session presenters:

Casey Olson, M.S., CCC-SLP has been a speech pathologist since 2013 and is employed with Monroe 2 Orleans BOCES. She earned her master’s degree from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. In 2018 she moved to a position as an assistive technology consultant where she works with teachers, classroom teams SLPs, and families to provide training, support, and consultation for AAC users.

Carrie McKain, M.S., Ed., has been a Special Education Teacher since 2009 and employed with Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES.  She earned her master’s degree from Roberts Wesleyan University in Rochester, NY in 2008.  She became an assistive technology consultant in 2016 and works with students, teachers, therapists, and families, to provide AAC consultative services and trainings. In the summer, she goes back into the classroom and teaches during the Extended Year School Program. She’s passionate about AAC and literacy.
