For children with the most complex bodies, scanning as an access method can give them communication power and independence. However, scanning requires visual skills that may be difficult for some and impossible for others. Developing a scanning array that focuses on using auditory rather than only visual skills may be the answer for individuals most challenged by access. This master class tackles the challenges of auditory scanning with single and multiple switches to access a robust vocabulary in a Minspeak® system.
The presentation begins with a brief overview, including case study examples, to address historical practices used to support AAC users with significant access challenges. While Minspeak® vocabulary programs are currently available that have been configured for visual scanning (e.g., CoreScanner®), there is no vocabulary program specifically designed for auditory scanning. As part of this master class, participants will have in-depth, hands-on instruction on how to modify the configuration of the symbols on the Unity®84 program for auditory scanners. This configuration is designed to address the unique demands of a person who is primarily using auditory skills to understand the organization of the symbols and the programming of the vocabulary. On Day 2, this class will focus on strategies for teaching the organization of vocabulary and for supporting the expressive language development of AAC users.
Come prepared to learn and practice on a UNITY® 84 device or PASS demo software. Loaner devices are available if you register early.
