The Calming Influence Of Animals On Children With Autism

A recent article from the Associated Press highlights the soothing effect pets can have on children with autism.

The story includes photos of Zucca, a black Labrador, and Perry, who provide a calming influence during potentially stressful trips to the dentist.

After years of terrifying visits to the dentist, the 9-year-old is far calmer, soothed by the presence of the black Labrador that helps children like him with autism face one of their worst fears.

The dogs' owner, Raul Varela, began the program in his native Chile after becoming certified by Bocalan, a Spain-based organization, as a therapy dog trainer for children with autism.

So far, the dogs have aided about 50 children visiting a single university-run dental clinic on the southern edge of Chile’s capital.
