Apps to Help Grow Language

This one-hour implementation class focuses on how to use fun and engaging apps to help an individual learn core words and learn how to put words together on an augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) device. Apps that can be used to target the following language objectives will be reviewed: 1) directing activities with verbs and prepositions, 2) describing with adjectives, and 3) making comments with interjections. In addition, common core standards and extension activities related to these apps and language objectives will be discussed. Direct instruction and app demonstration will be used to cover these principles.

This is a beginner to intermediate class for those who are implementing AAC systems. This class is intended for those who work with emerging and intermediate communicators who use AAC.

  2. Describe ways to use apps to increase single word core vocabulary.
  3. Identify which Common Core State Standards relate to these language objectives.
  4. Name one extension activity related to each goal.

Janet Lehr, M.S., CCC-SLP

Janet received her Bachelor of Arts from Gettysburg College with a major in Psychology and a minor in Elementary Education. She completed her Master of Science in Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Vermont and has completed numerous post-graduate courses in the areas of Special Education, American Sign Language, and Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC). Janet brings to the field of AAC her background of experience as a first grade teacher, a special education teacher, an adult education instructor, a sign language interpreter, and as a Speech Language Pathologist, in both public school and rehabilitation hospital settings.

Janet has developed and presented numerous specialized workshops and has written a wide range of unpublished support materials. She has created and modified many teaching materials (games, books, etc.) to help students learn Unity. Additionally she developed the Minspeak Application Programs™ Pathfinder™ Unity 32 and SpringBoard™ Unity, has helped to develop Unity™ 128, and co-authored the vocabulary programs Vanguard™ Unity Enchanced and UniChat™ and PalmChat™.

Janet holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), holds a Speech-Language Pathology license from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is a member of ASHA Division 12 (AAC Sig 12), a member of Maryland Speech-Language Hearing Association (MSHA), and a member of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC).

Submission Deadlines

Live online classes:  Participants wanting ASHA CEUs must be registered, "join" the class through his/her unique confirmation email letter, participate for the entire duration of the class, and pass a post-test with 80% accuracy or higher. No partial credits will be submitted. Participants have 15 days to submit all ASHA paperwork to PRC. ASHA paperwork received after 15 days will not be accepted.

In-person classes:  All ASHA paperwork must be submitted to the presenter by the end of the training day.


ASHA Information

Participants wanting ASHA CEUs for a multiple day training must attend all days. In addition, if there is a registration fee associated with the class and payment is not received, PRC will not submit your request for ASHA CEUs.

An annual ASHA CE Registry fee is required to register ASHA CEUs. ASHA CE Registry fees are paid by the participant directly to the ASHA National Office. The annual ASHA CE Registry fee allows registration of an unlimited number of ASHA CEUs for the calendar year. Most of our presenters are salaried, employee-owners of the Prentke Romich Company. A few of our presenters are contracted presenters.

This course provides excellent strategies for using apps to develop language and generalize that language to other activities. It provides resources to show how the development of specific core vocabulary addresses Common Core Standards. The chart of vocabulary that can be elicited with each app is an excellent tool to help determine which app would be useful at each stage of language development, and to provide ideas for language expansion.
