Overview

course-thumbnailRapid changes in U.S. demographics are being reflected in school and clinic caseloads. Classrooms can now represent up to 20 different cultures and languages. With the cultural makeup of our caseloads ever changing, it can be daunting to think about providing culturally responsive services to our bilingual AAC learners, particularly when there is a linguistic mismatch between the learner and the SLP. This presentation will provide an introductory overview of strategies that monolingual SLPs can add to their toolkit when working with bilingual ACC learners. By incorporating practices such as collecting language history and use information, collaborating effectively with interpreters, and partnering with parents, caregivers, and cultural brokers, SLPs will be empowered to provide best practice services to all AAC learners. Including relevant cultural and linguistic information that is gathered from these practices will help facilitate services that are functional, relevant, and individualized to the bilingual AAC learner.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Learners will discuss the importance of completing a language history, use a questionnaire with bilingual AAC learners and family members and use the questionnaire responses to inform treatment practices.
  2. Learners will be able to define ‘community cultural wealth’ and be able to apply 3 components to treatment planning.
  3. Learners will demonstrate the ability to successfully partner with parents, caregivers, and cultural brokers to identify topics, issues, and cultural/linguistic factors that can be incorporated into treatment.

Time Ordered Agenda:

2:00-2:15 How to use an asset-based lens to better understand Community Cultural Wealth

2:15-2:30 How to eliminate communication barriers between the family and the SLP and strategies to support the home language

2:30-2:50 Programming and Personalization of AAC devices for multilingual users

2:50-3:10 Collaborative Goal Writing for Effective Multilingual AAC Intervention

3:10-3:30 Invention Activities for Multilingual AAC Users
