The beginning steps of language “decontextualized” through story re-enactment and specific activities will be discussed. Language learned within the context of the story will be used in activities and environments outside of the story, but with reference to it. The concept of “story expansions” will be introduced as the process by which language is used across modalities for story decontextualization activities related to: art, music and movement and cooking. This will serve as ways in which language can be used for social communication and interaction, and particularly for AAC language skill development. A short question and answer session will end this presentation to assess learner objectives; and a short project will be assigned.
