Overview

course-thumbnailEngaging communicators in meaningful learning opportunities is important to teaching authentic communication and language skills. For some, creating opportunities for engagement can be challenging due to limited interests. This presentation will explore strategies for expanding a client’s interest inventory and identifying motivating activities. The presenter will also discuss the importance of communication partner input strategies to promote authentic communication and provide suggestions for developing and utilizing various strategies to encourage and develop language rather than requiring device use. Videos of parents, teachers and speech therapists engaging with children who use AAC will be viewed and analyzed. Various resources for supporting language development for young children and adolescents using Minspeak vocabularies will be provided.

  • Explain how to expand interests for children who have a limited interest inventory.
  • Identify three motivating activities for young children and adolescents.

Kym Heine, MA, CCC-SLP has worked exclusively in the field of AAC since receiving her Masters in 1982. Kym has been employed in a variety of settings to include rehabilitation centers, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and her own private practice.


Since 2010, she has worked as the AAC consultant for PRC-Saltillo, covering the state of MS.  Her primary role is to provide support for people who use AAC in all communicative environments.
