Overview

AAC for Adults with Acquired Injury or Illness: What Are My Options? 

This one-hour class will focus on augmentative alternative communication (AAC) solutions for adults who have an acquired an injury or illness that has impaired their ability to use speech to communicate effectively and efficiently. This class will look at the system features, vocabulary options, and access methods available from PRC for this patient population. Specifically, this course will highlight Essence and WordPower language systems, as well as, NuEye and NuPoint cursor control technology. Practical examples and materials will be used throughout the class.


Devices are not required for this training.


This training is intended for SLPs who are screening, supporting, and evaluating individuals with AAC needs.


Learning Outcomes: 

Participants will be able to:

  1. describe four features of Essence and WordPower.
  2. name the four general access methods available for individuals who need AAC
  3. match system features to a treatment population during the evaluation process


Agenda:

5 minutes – Introduction and Housekeeping

5 minutes – Review types of adult acquired disorders that may require AAC use

5 minutes – Review the Accent product line and general features

10 minutes – Review the four 4 general access methods (touch, head mouse, eye gaze and scanning)

15 minutes – Essence – overview, demonstration, questions

15 minutes – WordPower – overview, demonstration, questions

5 minutes – Resources and Wrap Up

  • All attendees will have the opportunity to download a Certificate of Attendance/Completion, depending on the class.
  • ASHA CEU and certificate eligibility require complete live attendance.
