Let's Get Talking: Using AAC in the Classroom - 3 hour

This implementation class will focus on using AAC in the classroom during speaking, reading and writing activities. Participants will learn about the importance of language development and core vocabulary, teaching methods to promote the use of core vocabulary across environments and strategies to engineer the classroom. In addition, participants will learn how to select target vocabulary for classroom activities based on language development principles. Methods for finding and teaching vocabulary will be covered, including icon tutor/word finder, vocabulary builder and write with icons. Finally, attendees will learn how to set up and delivery activities to foster communication. Practical examples and materials will be used throughout the class. The strategies presented will cover a range of communicative abilities and can be applied to a variety of language systems and communication devices.

Devices for this training are optional. If you choose to bring a device, please bring an Accent 800/1000/1400 or PRiO with the most current software version available. Participants can bring a PC laptop computer pre-loaded with PASS demo software for Accent. If you want to use a Mac laptop you will need a Windows emulator with PASS installed. PASS software is not compatible with iPads. This is not an iPad training.

This training is appropriate for any individual working with students who use communication devices in a classroom setting.

Connie McCafferty, M.A., CCC-SLP

Connie earned both her Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences and Master of Education degree in Deaf Education and Elementary Education from The Ohio State University.  She completed her Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology from The University of Cincinnati in 2007. Prior to joining PRC in 2015, Connie was an itinerant teacher for the hearing impaired and low-incidence educator in Fairfield County, Ohio.  During this time she traveled among multiple school districts and worked with students and teachers providing training and educational programming for children with a wide variety of hearing impairments as well as children with multiple disabilities and autism.  Upon completing her Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Connie was the K-12 Speech Language Pathologist for Forest Rose School in Lancaster, Ohio completing AAC evaluations and implementing a number of AAC and assistive technologies school-wide.  Then, Connie became a speech language pathologist for the Southwest Licking School District, Pataskala, Ohio, where she also helped supervise the low incidence units and coordinated the assistive technology team for the district.  Additionally, Connie has provided speech therapy through home health agencies to children and adults with complex communication needs.

Connie holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and a state license in Speech-Language Pathology from the State of Ohio.

Submission Deadlines

Live online classes:  Participants wanting ASHA CEUs must be registered, "join" the class through his/her unique confirmation email letter, participate for the entire duration of the class, and pass a post-test with 80% accuracy or higher. No partial credits will be submitted. Participants have 15 days to submit all ASHA paperwork to PRC. ASHA paperwork received after 15 days will not be accepted.

In-person classes:  All ASHA paperwork must be submitted to the presenter by the end of the training day.


ASHA Information

Participants wanting ASHA CEUs for a multiple day training must attend all days. In addition, if there is a registration fee associated with the class and payment is not received, PRC will not submit your request for ASHA CEUs.

An annual ASHA CE Registry fee is required to register ASHA CEUs. ASHA CE Registry fees are paid by the participant directly to the ASHA National Office. The annual ASHA CE Registry fee allows registration of an unlimited number of ASHA CEUs for the calendar year. Saltillo presentations will focus exclusively on ChatFusion, NovaChat, TouchChat, VocabPC, MultiChat15, WordPower, TouchChat app, Explore AAC, or TouchChat website.
