Learning to Read with AAC: Conventional Literacy

This one-hour AAC implementation class focuses on conventional literacy instruction for children who use AAC. The first portion of this class defines conventional literacy and reviews goals for the conventional reader. In addition, the components of a robust reading curriculum are reviewed. The bulk and remainder of the class discusses and demonstrates teaching strategies and activities to target phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, guided reading, vocabulary instruction and enhancing comprehension and fluency. Practical examples and materials are provided in order for participants to begin literacy instruction with children who use AAC.
