Building Blocks to AAC Success - Block 2: Communication Partner Strategies

In this 90-minute block on augmentative alternative communication (AAC), participants will learn about best practice strategies for the communication partner. This class will cover creating the right learning environment as well as creating communication opportunities. While taking a client-centered approach, participants will learn how to model, prompt and respond during AAC intervention. The class will conclude by reviewing some signs of success. Through demonstration, video and practice exercises, participants will learn about the fundamentals of AAC intervention.  

You do not need to bring an AAC device to this training.
 
This class is intended for anyone interested in learning about the fundamentals of AAC.

Christine Tran, M.S., CCC-SLP

Christine earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and completed her Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Marquette University. Prior to joining PRC in June 2017, Christine has served pediatric and adult populations in a variety of settings, including school, clinic, early intervention, hospital, and home health. She began her career as a Speech Language Pathologist at a special education public charter school setting where she gained invaluable experience in AAC and working with low-incidence populations, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, CVI, and other neurogenetic disorders. Christine provided AAC intervention with students using low and high technology (manual boards, alternative access, and speech generating devices through direct selection and eye gaze), and she worked closely with the AT specialist in determining appropriate and efficient communication access for students. She also provided parent trainings and staff development trainings in AAC implementation as well as feeding/swallowing disorders, and supervised graduate students for their clinical practicum. In her most recent position, she served as a Speech Language Pathologist in a clinic setting, including an intensive early intervention program for children with global developmental delays. Christine developed a core vocabulary program for the classroom and delivered in-service trainings on AAC and core vocabulary language and implementation. She also completed AAC device trials, conducted AAC evaluations, and provided AAC training and support to families, and other therapists and team members.

Christine holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), a state license in Speech Language Pathology in the state of California, and is a member of ASHA’s Special Interest Division 12 (AAC Division).

Submission Deadlines

Live online classes:  Participants wanting ASHA CEUs must be registered, "join" the class through his/her unique confirmation email letter, participate for the entire duration of the class, and pass a post-test with 80% accuracy or higher. No partial credits will be submitted. Participants have 15 days to submit all ASHA paperwork to PRC. ASHA paperwork received after 15 days will not be accepted.

In-person classes:  All ASHA paperwork must be submitted to the presenter by the end of the training day.


ASHA Information

Participants wanting ASHA CEUs for a multiple day training must attend all days. In addition, if there is a registration fee associated with the class and payment is not received, PRC will not submit your request for ASHA CEUs.

An annual ASHA CE Registry fee is required to register ASHA CEUs. ASHA CE Registry fees are paid by the participant directly to the ASHA National Office. The annual ASHA CE Registry fee allows registration of an unlimited number of ASHA CEUs for the calendar year.
