October Awareness Month and Observances

Posted Oct 2, 2017 - 1:33pm

Fall is here: Falling leaves, warm cozy sweaters, and, of course, Halloween!

But October is also filled with awareness days and observances. It's a busy month, and here’s what PRC has in store:

Rett Syndrome Awareness Month

Affecting mostly girls, Rett Syndrome is a rare, non-inherited genetic disorder. Girls affected with the disorder begin to develop normally; however, at six to 18 months begin to display classic signs of Rett, including problems with language and communication.

AAC Awareness Month

There are a lot of myths surrounding Augmentative and Alternative Communication, or AAC, and October gives us a wonderful opportunity to educate others on AAC’s ability to promote language and communication.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month

The National Down Syndrome Society puts it best, we think: “During the month of October, we celebrate people with Down syndrome and make people aware of our abilities and accomplishments. It’s not about celebrating disabilities, it’s about celebrating abilities.”

World Cerebral Palsy Day

Friday, October 6 is World Cerebral Palsy Day, and it’s a day to celebrate and express pride in the lives and achievements of those with CP, as well as create new solutions and produce tangible actions and outcomes to improve the lives of those with CP.

Check back with us throughout the month to learn more and find out how you, too, can be a part of these celebrations!
