Language Lab: Core Words New App for iPad

PRC released its first iPad app in late October with wonderful reviews. The app, Language Lab: Core Words, was created to be used as a therapy tool to teach emerging communicators the use of high frequency core words. These are the words children typically develop first.

The app has three sections for each word set.

  • In the ‘Learn’ section, the words are introduced through simple animations and sentences. Children can see and hear how the word can be used in three different examples. This encourages the generalization of the target words.
  • In the ‘Practice’ section, a target word is given with the expectation that the child then find it on their device.
  • Finally, in the ‘Review’ section, the child is shown a sentence and animation with the target word missing. They can then find the word on their device. The sentences are all recorded with a child’s voice as well.

The animations are fun and engaging. There is also a ‘Names’ section where pictures can be uploaded to named categories. The child can then practice identifying people familiar to them. The app is only available for the iPad and iPad2. Currently it is being offered as a free app. Stay tuned for more apps to come, all based on language development objectives from PRC’s AAC Language Lab.
