Transferring Memory from a Liberator to an Older Mac.

Note: If your are using a Macintosh that has a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port you will need to purchase a USB Serial Adapter to plug in your MAC. These are available where Macintoshes are sold.

1. Connect your MTI cable to the RS232 connector on your Liberator. Connect the other end to the connector on the Mac that has the picture of a handset by it.

2. Power the MAC up while holding down the Shift key. Continue to hold down the Shift key until the MAC displays Welcome to Macintosh, all Extensions Off.

3. Next, make sure SerialKeys and  Apple Talk are disabled on your computer.

4. Insert your MTI disk into your floppy disk drive.

Note: If you are using the MTI+ software on CD, you will need to open the MTI icon from your CD-Rom.

5. On your computer screen, double click on the MTI icon to open the program. Double click on PRC.

6. On your computer screen, click on the name of the device you are using.

7. On the Liberator:

A. Make sure the MTI cable (MTI-6) is still connected to the Liberator and your Mac.
B. Turn the Liberator On and open the Toolbox.
C. Open the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU in the Toolbox.
D You should see the Transfer Memory Menu on the Liberator's display.

Note: If nothing happens when you activate the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU, you will see a message on the Liberator's display stating that communication is not established. Recheck your computer/Liberator connections and make sure the cable is securely plugged in on both ends. Make sure you are in the correct drive. Select the MEMORY TRANSFER MENU again.

LIBERATOR TRANSFER MEMORY MENU

There are two screens to the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU.
Screen 1:
Option 1 = save everything in the Liberator's memory onto a disk.
Option 2 = load everything you saved back into the Liberator.
Option 3 = save only what is in a specific user area.
Option 4 = load the area you saved back into an area in the Liberator.

Screen 2:
Option 1 = make a Liberator-to-Liberator memory transfer.
Option 2 = the MTI default baud rate (the speed at which information will be sent to the computer). This is important in a Liberator-to-Liberator transfer.
Option 3 = load or save menu settings. Default is YES. If you do not want any Liberator settings to be saved, set this to NO before you start a transfer.

E. If You Choose to Save or Load the Liberator's Entire Contents:
Activate option 1 or 2 on screen 1. Then look at your computer screen.

F. If You Choose to Save or Load One Area:
Activate option 3 or 4 on screen 1. The Liberator shows you a menu of areas that are created or can be created. Select the area that you want to save or load memory into. Then go to your computer.

8. If you are saving: type a name for the file you are going to save, e.g., LIBVOC1 (There is an 8-character limit for the name).

9. If you are loading: in the computer directory, select the name of the file you want to load. If you can't find the file you want, try another drive.

10. The MTI program displays a box on your computer screen that contains the message, "You are about to transfer Vocabulary....'"  Press <F1> to continue the transfer. Or you can press <ESC> if you decide not to transfer anything.

11. On the computer:  While the transfer is in progress, your computer screen may show you what percentage of the transfer has taken place until the transfer is completed, or you may see a bouncing ball for the duration of the transfer.

12.  When the transfer is complete, activate <F10> to return to the original Memory Transfer screen on your computer.

13. On the Liberator:  While the transfer is in progress, the Liberator displays the warning, "Memory Transfer in progress. Please wait." When the transfer is complete the display returns to the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU.

14.  Press option 5 to Exit.

Note: If you are using Word Prediction and want to save the Word Prediction Dictionary to a disk, do it now, before exiting from the MTI. Go to the WORD PREDICTION MENU (SYSTEM FUNCTION MENU, screen 5, option 1) and select Option 2 from screen 2 of the Word Prediction Menu.

Note: If you are having trouble establishing communication between your PRC device and your Macintosh, the first thing you want to do is power-up (turn your computer On), with the shift-key held down. Let go of the shift-key when the message "Welcome to Macintosh, all Extensions are Disabled" is displayed. You may not need to do this if you have a newer Macintosh system. Next insure AppleTalk is disabled. To check, click on the Open Apple and go to Chooser. Then make sure AppleTalk is disabled.
