Using the Vocabulary Builder in the Vantage Lite
Vocabulary Builder is a great tool for simplifying any Unity program. It lets you show just certain words and phrases that you want to teach and hides all the rest. There are some already done for you in Unity, called LAMP sets. We will use Unity 60 Sequenced as an example.
1. From Core, go to the Pages page, and then to the key labeled BUILDING.
2. Select the key that says LAMP SET 1. If you are using a device, there will be a wait time of a few seconds. If you are using PASS, there is very little transition time. Your screen now looks like this:
Vocabulary Builder has hidden everything except for the beginning icons for “go”, “more”, and “stop”. The other keys showing are tools. This is not a special page; this is core vocabulary with most of the keys masked over. To go back to the full appearance of Core Vocabulary, select the Pages key, and then select Builder Off.
You can use your own word list in Vocabulary Builder. There are a couple of ways to do this.
1. You can save a list of words as a plain text file on a USB drive and import by using the Vocabulary Builder Menu.
2. You can go directly to the Vocabulary Builder Menu and begin moving words from the “hide side” to the “show side”
Save a list of words as a plain text file:
1. Create your list as a plain text file and import it into your device. This means you can use ANY text file!
2. To import a new list, transfer the list from your computer to a USB memory stick.
3. Put the USB drive into the USB port on your device.
4. Go to the Vocabulary Builder Menu in the ToolBox.
5. When you select “Import New List,” it will open a screen showing your USB memory stick as a choice, and you can open it and select the vocabulary you want to import.
6. After your word list has been imported, you may see a message that tells you certain words on your list are not in that Unity program. The message asks you if you want to save the list of words not found. Choose the one you want to do.
7. Next you will have a choice to change the name of the file. Then select OK
8. Next choose Use Word Lists from the Vocabulary Builder Menu.
9. Choose the list you imported.
10. Make sure that you turn Vocabulary Builder ON at the bottom of the screen, or check Enable Masking, if you are using PASS or the ECO.
11. Select Save Masked Info, and then Go to Core.
Make your list directly from the Vocabulary Builder Menu
1. The Vocabulary Builder Menu shows two panes, one for hidden words, and one for shown words. If you are using a Vantage, select the option for Vocabulary to Hide/Show

2. You can move items from the show side to the hide side by selecting the item (touch it or click on it with the mouse). When the item is highlighted, select either hide or show from the middle column.
3. You can search for words by first selecting either the hide or show side, and then typing the word. With ECO, plug in a keyboard. With Vantage Lite, use the keyboard that appears on screen.
4. When your list is complete, you can go to Core and view it by selecting Vocabulary Builder ON (or Enable Masking), then Save Mask Info, and the Go to Core.
5. You also have the option of saving your list as a named word list or a named sequence list.

Word Lists and Sequence Lists in Vocabulary Builder
1. What is the difference between a Word List and a Sequence List?
A Word List can show duplicate words because in Unity there may be more than one way to say a word, sentence, or phrase. If you want to hide all duplicates, so that you only see one way to say a word, preferably from Core Vocabulary, then you should save this modified list as a Sequence List.
A Sequence List travels with the memory transfer file of the user area where it was created, and will always show just the sequences that you chose for that list of words.
A Word List may be used in any of the 6 user areas in the device, and may show several ways to say the same word.
2. If you reset the device to factory defaults in the Maintenance Menu, it will erase both kinds of lists, and leave just the lists that came in the device when it was new. So, Back up your user area with a Memory Transfer File!
