Calibrating the Tracker in the ECO

If you are having trouble using the Tracker and the movements on the screen of the ECO, you may want to try calibrating the tracker.

What CCHP ON does is turn off the Calibration that occurs when a user moves their head off screen.  If you have a child or an adult that does not get that process or cannot manage the calibration, you can turn it off. By doing so you have now created an absolute headpointing system that is relative to where they started.  It does not get adjusted when they move off the screen in any of the 4 basic directions.  CCHP mode can be very effective for kids with CP or other disabilities who have spastic movements that take them off screen and become misaligned.

CCHP mode has been tried with both kids and adults that it was intended for and it had an immediate effect on their performance.  They knew when their heads were at midline they could use it and it would go exactly where they were looking no more bobbing around to get it aligned.   For kids or adults who have significant cognitive impairments, it is helpful because the headpointer only responds when they are looking at it.  The calibration works fine with any grid size (4/8/15/45/60/84/144).

The tracker calibration is set best with two people present.  While the user is holding still in the middle of the ECO screen, select the CC HP MODE ON key.  Now your screen will be calibrated to the middle of your screen

CC HP MODE off  =  Places the headpointer into relative mode.  (This is its normal
operating mode)
CC HP MODE ON = Manually centers the headpointer on-screen at the current User's
position and places the headpointer into absolute mode.

 Programming CCHP Mode.
The best way to understand CCHP mode is to actually use it. You can program in the CC HP MODE ON under any icon sequence, page or activity that you choose to.  We created a new page so the Tracker page will be within the device but not always available to the user to accidentally select and change.
1.      Using Create Page in your toolbox then spell the name of your page.  We called ours TRACKER.   Select the key size you wish to use.

2.     Now select Spell Text for Message, Insert Tool and choose CC HP MODE ON. Select OK once.

3.     Select Choose next key to define and press a different key to program in the CC HP MODE OFF.  (This will only be needed if you decide the CC HP MODE ON is not working for you.)  Now select Spell Text for Message, Insert Tool and choose CC HP MODE OFF.  Select OK to exit completely out of the programming screen.

4.      Turn on your Headpointing and make sure everything is working.  You may want to set your Horizontal and Vertical to 3 (The defaults are fine but a shade fast) in the Access Method Menu.

5.      From your Toolbox, select Page Menu and select your New Page (TRACKER). Have the user move the tracker hand to the middle of the screen. Hold Still and try not to move around while doing this.  Select the CC HP MODE ON key on the screen. You are calibrating the headpointer to the position your dot is in. The calibration is accepted immediately without feedback from the ECO.

6.      Now start moving your head around --- move off the screen move back to the calibration point you should notice that the calibration did not change.

7.      This does not happen when in regular mode.  Without CCHP you would be misaligned and the headpointer would be off one side or the other.

If this mode is too difficult for the user and you want to return to the original Tracker settings, you can select CCHP OFF.
