Instructions for Using the ECO Recovery CD
*******************************IMPORTANT *******************************
THE RECOVERY PROCESS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR ECO HARD DRIVE. THIS INCLUDES INTERNET ACCESS SOFTWARE, PROGRAMS, HARDWARE DRIVERS, EVERYTHING.
In the event that your device's hard drive or the Windows operating system quits working, you will have to use the RECOVERY disk. The Recovery disk can also be used to update the ECO's Operating System to the current version, should that be necessary.
Before using this Disk, Call the PRC Service Department. Tell the Service Tech what you are about to do and why. (800-262-1990)
Unless you are very familiar with computers and understand when and how to use a RECOVERY disk, call the PRC Service Department first and tell them what is wrong with your device before you attempt to use the RECOVERY disk.
The recovery process can take up to several hours. You need to be available before the actual recovery starts and when it is completed. You do not need to be available while the recovery process is taking place.
What You Need To Have Available:
- The RECOVERY CD
- POWER DVD and the envelope it came in. (This came in the box with your ECO.)
- The ECO battery charger
- The USB keyboard that came with your ECO
- The USB mouse that came with your device
- On the back of your device on the Windows label, there is a Product Key number which consists of 25 numbers and letters. Copy this number to a piece of paper.
- An unbent paper clip.
Using the Recovery Disk
Turn your ECO OFF
Now turn the ECO ON using the
on the front of the case.
Slide the RECOVERY CD into the DVD/CD player on the top of the case. The DVD/CD player will accept and seat the CD.
If your ECO does not come back ON:
Reset the ECO. Unbend a paper clip and poke the straight end into the small hole on the left side panel of the case. Use the paper clip to gently press the reset button. Remove the paper clip.

Plug in the ECO's Battery Charger! With the ECO ON and the RECOVERY CD in the DVD player, plug in the battery charger.
Be aware of the display screen while the pre-installation process takes place. This will take 10 minutes or so and you must be available to answer on-screen questions. You will be asked whether you want to continue or cancel. You will be told to plug in the battery charger.
The recovery will take at least an hour and possibly more. You do not have to stay with your device during the recovery process.
When the recovery is completed you will see one of two messages:
"Restore (or recovery) completed successfully. Please eject the disk and select OK." Eject the recovery disk and select OK on your device.
If you see, "Restore (or recovery) unsuccessful. Hit the reset button on the left side of case and start over." Follow the steps above and complete a second recovery. If you see this message at the end of the second recovery, call the PRC Service Department as your device will probably have to come in for repairs.
When the Recovery is Successful
Plug in the USB keyboard and the USB mouse that came with your device.
If you have not already done so, eject the RECOVERY CD by pressing the small rectangular button on the DVD/CD player. Press OK in the box on your touch screen.

About Internet Access
During the recovery process you lost your internet connection. You must re-install your internet connection in order to use the internet. If you have forgotten what you did, or if you never had internet but want it now, call your internet service provider for information on setting up an internet connection for your device. The ECO can accommodate: a PCMCIA card, but if you have both an Ethernet card and a phone card, they will have to share the PCMCIA slot; a wireless compact flash card (80211G); and a USB adapter for internet.
Activate your Copy of Windows
Go to the Toolbox.
Open the MAINTENANCE MENU.
Select the Activate Windows option
.
You have 30 days to activate your copy of Windows. If you fail to do this, Windows will quit working and you will not be able to use your device until you perform another recovery and activate Windows.
You can activate Windows by selecting Phone or Internet. If you select Internet, you must be connected to the internet.
To Activate Windows by Phone Call
Position your ECO near your phone. Make sure the keyboard and mouse are plugged in. You will have to speak into the phone and type onto the ECO screen.

Select your location.
Dial the number you see on the screen.
Listen to the introduction. Respond YES to the "Activate Windows XP" question.
Recite the blocks of numbers you see on your ECO screen when you are asked.
The voice on the phone will give you blocks of numbers in return.
Type these numbers into the blocks on your screen as you receive them.
Click on Next when asked.
Click on Finish.
Close the program
To Activate Windows over the Internet

Make sure your internet connection is working. Open Internet Explorer and view a Web page.
Once you know your internet connection is working, double-click on the time in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
Make sure the date and time are set correctly. If it is not, set them to the correct date and time.
You can register here or not. We recommend you do not do this now, so select No. Select Next.
You should see "Activation successful." Select OK.
IMPORTANT NOTE! Running the RECOVERY disk will remove the ATT voices from your ECO. If you want any of these voices on your ECO, you will have to re-install them using the AT&T Voices disk that came with your Recovery Disk.
To Install AT&T Voices
Insert the AT&T Voices disk into the DVD/CD player on the back top of your device.
Go to the Toolbox.
Open the SPEECH MENU.
The Synthesizer option may already be set to AT&T. If it is not, select the arrows until you see Natural Speech.
You see the MANAGE AT&T Voices key. Select it.

If you did not insert the AT&T Voices disk before now, you will see this warning:

You must install the AT&T Voices disk before you can continue.
When the AT&T Voices disk is installed and running, you will see the following screen:

The above graphic shows the English voices. Notice that all the voices have a green check mark in the upper right corner. This means if you select OK, all these voices will be installed in your device. If you only want a few voices, or just one, uncheck the boxes of the voices you do not want to install, then select OK.
It will take approximately 25-30 minutes to install all of the English voices. The fewer voices you install, the less time it takes. Some countries will only have one or two voices on their disk.
During installation, you will see a yellow box telling you which voice is currently being installed. If you select the Cancel button at any point during the installation, your device will finish installing the current voice and then stop installation.
When the voices are installed you will see a screen like the one below:
If you are satisfied, select Cancel to exit this screen. Select the voice you want to use in the SPEECH MENU. Select OK to exit the SPEECH MENU. Eject the AT&T Voices disk.
Uninstall AT&T Voices
If you want to uninstall any voices, select them (a green arrow will appear in the box in the upper right corner) and select Uninstall Voices.

You will see this warning box reminding you that you will need the AT&T Voices disk if you ever want to reinstall any voices you remove. If you want to continue to uninstall some voices, select YES. If not, select NO.
When you are satisfied, select Cancel to exit this screen. Select the voice you want to use in the SPEECH MENU. Select OK to exit the SPEECH MENU
