How do I Use a Joystick with My Pathfinder?

SUMMARY: A joystick allows you to scan up, down, left, right and diagonally.

Open the SELECTION TECHNIQUE MENU.  In the Selection Technique option, select Joystick

IMPORTANT NOTE!   To use a serial joystick with a Pathfinder Plus, you must have an adapter.  Call the PRC Rehab Department, 800-262-1990, for complete information about ordering part number 13505-Joystick Adapter

A Joystick is the most versatile scanning device. You can push a Joystick in any direction to scan up, down, left, right or diagonally. You can also use an Arm Slot Control instead of a Joystick. The Arm Slot Control allows Joystick-type scanning for people who do not have enough fine motor skills to use a Joystick.

If you are using a Pathfinder Plus, you need a joystick adapter One end of the adapter must plug into both the A and B switch connectors on your device. It should also have an option to connect a third switch for manual entry. Your joystick cable must fit into the other end of the connector.   Do not plug your joystick connector directly into the Mouse or Computer port on the Pathfindert Plus (the joystick will not work this way).

If you are using an older Pathfinder, you will be able to plug the serial joystick connector into the Joystick port on the top of the device.

To Scan:

Move the joystick to scan to the location you want. Your device will automatically select the location after the acceptance time has passed,  or you can activate a separate switch to select the location.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  When you are scanning in the Activity Row, all joystick activations move to the right. You cannot go left.

IMPORTANT NOTE!   If you have a USB joystick plugged into your device and the joystick doesn't work,  it may have been configured to work like a mouse originally.  Go to the SELECTION TECHNIQUE MENU and set the Selection Technique option to Headpointing.  If Internal Tracker is an option in your Headpointing menus,  make sure it is turned OFF.  The joystick should now work.

You may use a USB joystick with a Pathfinder Plus.  Use the settings mentioned in the note above.
