To save memory to an IBM computer running Windows or to load memory back into the Vantage/Vanguard:

1. All memory transfers should be made with the battery charger plugged in. Your communication aid and your computer should be OFF. Connect the small end of the battery charger that came with your device to the battery charger connector on your device. Plug the other end into a working wall outlet.

2. All memory transfers should be made with the MTI Serial cable (also known as #11819 or Null Modem) that came with your MTI. With your computer OFF, plug one end of this cable into Serial Port 1 on your computer. Plug the other end into the matching Serial Port connector on your device. If you are using the Vanguard 2, you will use Port A.

3. Turn your communication aid and your computer ON. Insert the MTI CD into the appropriate CD drive on your computer. Use Windows Explorer to go to the drive that has the MTI CD in it or right click on My Computer and click on Explore to go to the drive that has the MTI CD in it.

4. Double click on the MTI.exe icon. The MTI screen is visible on your computer monitor.

5. Make sure your MTI software is set to MTI Vantage/Vanguard. (Look at the blue bar on the top of the MTI window. If it is set to another device, change this setting in the MTI Options menu.)

6. Press the TOOLS key on the front of the device case. Select the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU.

7. If you have the MTI Method option, make sure this setting it set to AUTO or SERIAL. (Older devices will not have this option).

8. Activate the transfer option you want to use (e.g., Save Entire Device Contents or Save One User Area).

This is a picture of the Transfer Memory Menu in a Vantage/Vanguard.

If everything is connected correctly, you computer screen will change and you will see Save Memory to File on your computer.

9. On your computer, go to the drive/open the folder where you want to save the memory. (A)

10. Type in a name for the new file (B), (e.g., Notebook 1). Click on Save. (C)

11. The transfer could take awhile. When the transfer is finished, you will see, Memory Transfer is Complete. Click OK.

To Restore a File:

1. Select Load Entire Device or Load One User Area from the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU.

2. On your computer, select the file you want to restore (e.g., VTMEM601).

NOTE:  If you select the option to Load a file, the list of file options will appear on your device.  Select the file you want to load.  You may receive a yellow box on your screen.  You must select Yes to Erase the vocabulary before loading.  Merge is not a functional option at this time and may scramble your vocabulary.

This is a picture of the yellow memory transfer message.

3. Click on Restore on your computer.  You will now see the message Memory Transfer in Progress.

NOTE: If you are loading this vocabulary into another device, the unit you are transferring memory into must have the same, or higher, software version as the device you are transferring from or else the memory transfer will not take place.

MEMO:  If you have vocabulary that was tranferred from a Vantage with 2.04 software version or lower, you must transfer this vocabulary into a device or PASS software with version 4.06 first, then resave the file, BEFORE loading into a device with 5.0 and higher software.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Importing Sound (wav) Files You import sound files while you are in storing menus (STORE CORE, CREATE or MODIFY ACTIVITIES/PAGES, ASSIGN KEYS, etc.). After connecting your memory device, it is a good idea to go first to the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU and change the MTI Method option to either AUTO or SERIAL. (Older versions of software won't have this option.) Then begin the storing process for importing sound files.
