How do I Use Computer Emulation with a Serial Cable on my Vantage/Vanguard?

WARNING! Turn your Vantage/Vanguard and your computer OFF before you plug in any cables!

For IBM compatible computers. Plug one end of the Null Modem Cable (part #11819) into Serial Port 1 on your computer.

Plug the other end into the 9 pin connector on the side of the Vantage or into Port A on the side of the Vanguard 2.

NOTE: If your computer does not have a Serial port, you must purchase a USB to Serial adapter at a local computer store. We recommend using the Keyspan High Speed USB to Serial Adapter.

For MAC Computers: Use the MTI-Mac cable (part # 11977) that came with your device. Plug the small round end of the cable into the modem port on your computer. Plug the other end into the 9 pin connector on the side of the Vantage or into Port A on the side of the Vanguard 2.

NOTE: If your Mac has a USB port instead of a modem port, you will need to buy a USB Serial Adapter. You can purchase it wherever Macintosh computers are sold. We recommend using the Keyspan USB Twin Serial Adapter for a Mac.

Now turn the Vantage/Vanguard and your computer ON.

Setting Up your Vantage/Vanguard for SerialKeys or AAC Keys:

1. Activate the TOOLBOX key on the top of the case.

This is a picture of the tools key on the top of the Vantage.

2. Select the Output Menu from your Toolbox.

This is a picture of the Output Key found in the Toolbox.

3. Your setting should be as follows:

Output Method = RS232

Output = On

Auto Line Feed = Off

Output Mode = Immediate

Baud Rate = 1200 (Make sure that the Baud Rate is the same as the baud rate for the SerialKeys / AAC Keys settings on your computer.)

Character Pacing = Off Turn this On when you want to send large amounts of text, like a Notebook.

4. Select OK to exit.

Your device is now ready to perform Keyboard emulation. If you currently do not have a software emulator loaded onto your computer and need assistance, use the link below to see the article, "AAC Keys: An Alternate to Serial Keys".
