Tips for Teaching your Remote Commands to the ECO2

With its built-in infrared (IR), your communication aid can learn infrared signals for any device you own that has a remote control. This includes a TV, CD player, VCR, toys, etc. You teach the remote control signals to the Pathfinder and then store the commands for the signals on your overlay.

There are a number of remote control activities that are already set up in your device. You select these activities from the REMOTES activity in your Activity Row.

You will have to teach your communication aid the remote control signals for any appliances you want it to control except the X-10. It already knows the X10 signals.

TIPS:  If you have trouble with the Vantage/Vanguard learning the commands from the remote control, you may want to try these ideas.

Each time to you teach your device a signal, test it. You will know immediately whether your device learned it or not.

1. Put new batteries in the remote control.

2. If you are in a room with fluorescent lighting, try turning the lights off.  Also,  close the curtains or pull the shades if there is a lot of bright light coming into the room.

3. When you teach commands, try holding the remote control at different distances from the right side of the case, e.g.,  2” away, then 4” away, then 6” away.

4. Try holding down the key on the remote control  that you want your device to learn until the IR Setup Menu pops up on the Vantage/Vanguard display.  Release the remote button and test the signal.

5. If the VT/VG contiues to have trouble learning a particular signal, try teaching it a different command-- such as Volume Up.  If the device still will not communicate the signal, please call the Service Department at 1-800-262-1990.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you have completed teaching remote signals to your device, save the device's memory.

Use Save Entire Device in the TRANSFER MEMORY MENU so that you do not have to re-teach the signals if something should happen to your device's memory. You must use Save Entire Device. Saving a single user area will not save your remote control signals.
