"40 for 40" Program - Where Are They Now?
Adam Assi received a Vantage through PRC’s “40 for 40” program.
Adam will turn 11-years-old in the fall. When he first received his Vantage, he had no way to communicate other than through vocalizations and gesturing. He’s always had a strong desire to communicate and interact with others, especially his Mom! It was exciting for the whole team to be able to hear him ask for his Mom the first time using his device! It didn’t take long for him to start asking for his other favorite items, including books, videos, candy, and cheese.
He’s continued to make tremendous strides during the last five years. When he first started using the device, it took him some time to learn where all the Minspeak buttons were located, so he began spelling what he wanted using the QWERTY screen on his Vantage. We were amazed at how quickly his vocabulary increased and now he can type on a regular computer as well. He still uses the Vantage to communicate because the Minspeak icons are faster for him to use now and his friends at school enjoy using the device to talk with him as well. He has also been successful at taking his device in the community to go shopping or order food at a restaurant. He enjoys the feeling of independence and of doing things for himself. Thank you PRC for giving Adam a voice that can be heard and enjoyed by others! We cannot wait to see what new things he will share with us in the years to come!
