I was born in Hollywood Presbyterian on September 7, 1984. No one could have predicted what would take place that very day. My mother was left without oxygen causing me also to lose oxygen for about twelve minutes. The doctors quickly performed a cesarean section on my mother but they could not save her from the fourteen and a half-year coma that would eventually send her home with the Lord. Within months of my birth, doctors were able to diagnose me with cerebral palsy, a condition that restricts me to a wheelchair and having to use a communication device. God has really helped me by not allowing my disability to be a heavy burden or a hindrance to me.
Being raised a Christian, I have always possessed a positive attitude toward my disability. My aunt who raised me, always taught me there wasn't anything I couldn't achieve. Therefore, I have an indomitable spirit toward life and pursuing education. I have fostered a great love for learning and school.
In 2004, I graduated from high school Magna Cum Laude along with other honors. I am now pursuing a BA degree in youth ministry from Life Pacific College and hope to become a youth pastor. I also hope to someday have my own Christian youth magazine geared towards young people. I love to go out and speak with young people when I have the opportunity. Communicating through speaking and writing is my greatest strength. I wrote for my high school yearbook and currently write articles for my college yearbook. My biggest challenge when I was younger was learning how to convey my thoughts. My AAC device really helped me to overcome this challenge. I really can't remember not having an AAC device.
I obtained my Pathfinder through Medicare and my private insurance. It has enhanced my life in so many ways I can't list them all. For example, it has given me the ability to achieve my education goals, which I couldn't without it. Also, it has allowed me to be as independent in my room as I can by enabling me to turn on devices with the infrared system, such as, my computer, TV, CD player, etc.
I enjoy reading the Left Behind series and autobiographies and going to the movies and shopping. And I enjoy studying, reading the Bible, traveling with my family, and watching JC-TV online. I am also a big Lakers fan. I like to watch them and attend their games. But what gives me the most satisfaction is going out speaking to young people about staying focused on their relationship with God and their education goals.
