Robert PierceProfile of Success - Robert Pierce

Three-year-old Robert Pierce is a student in a full-day self-contained classroom at Roosevelt Children's Center (RCC) in Newark, NY. He earned the honor of student of the month of March 2005 for the progress he has made in learning to communicate with SpringBoard.

Robert is shown using the SpringBoard to communicate. Christina Kiss, Speech Language Therapist and Assistive Technology Provider (shown with Robert), helps him become efficient at using the device.

The SpringBoard allows Robert, whose understanding of language is higher than his ability to express himself verbally, to communicate more effectively while enhancing verbal skills.

Robert has been receiving Assitive Technology services from RCC for nearly two years and started using the SpringBoard in September of 2004. He continues daily use of the device to supplement his verbal communication in class and at home. Ms. Kiss states, "Robert has not been using the Springboard as much as he was six months ago due to increased verbalizations and intelligibility, as well as an increase in his desire to communicate verbally."

SpringBoard can be an excellent starting point for the child or adult just beginning the augmentative communication process. SpringBoard can also be the next step for someone who has demonstrated success with manual communication boards or static display devices with limited message capacity. As in Robert's case, the SpringBoard can also be used to facilitate the development of verbal communication.

Special thanks to Christina Kiss for her assistance with this Profile.
