New Speech-Generating Device is Designed for Literate Adults with ALS, Parkinson’s, and Other Medical Conditions that Can Impact the Ability to Speak
Wooster, OH, August 17, 2010 – Prentke Romich Company (PRC), the leading manufacturer of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices for individuals with speech disabilities, today announced the launch of Essence™, the company’s first AAC devices designed specifically for adults with acquired speech challenges.

Simple to use with little or no training, every Essence device features:
- Standard QWERTY keyboard;
- Pre-stored vocabulary and word prediction software for fast communication;
- Abbreviated expansion capability that saves key strokes by converting typed abbreviations into full words and phrases;
- Useful tools, including an MP3 player, appointment reminder, alarm function for soliciting help, and more.
Three Essence models are available:
- Essence VT, a small, lightweight model with a built-in handle for maximum portability;
- Essence VG, a mid-sized device with a large 12.1” screen for easy access and viewing;
- Essence PRO, a speech-output device and robust computer in one, with full Windows® XP functionality.
Multiple access options make Essence unique in the marketplace, according to Moffat. “As a person’s motor abilities change, he or she can move from selecting keys by hand to using a light-pressure scanning switch or an infrared headpointing system,” he noted. “Essence PRO users have the additional option of controlling the device using ECOpoint™, PRC’s eye-control system.”
