ABATE stands for A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments, and two youngsters with communication challenges were among a handful of patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Portland to receive equipment to help them defy the odds and break the communication and disabilities barriers. Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Kelcee and Hannah received the PRC communication devices that will allow them to interact with their family, peers, classmates and environment. During the event one of the bikers said, "It's about freedom," this so aptly says it all. Kelcee who wore out her last device was so excited to have her new Vantage communication device she told the group assembled, "Thank you. I am excited to be able to talk to everyone again."
ABATE raises the money for the equipment through an annual raffle of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. This year's donation will bring the total that ABATE has given for the Equipment Needs List patients to $350,000.00 over the course of 13 years.
This year PRC offered the two Vantage communication devices at a reduced price to make them more easily attainable. ABATE raised the funds to purchase the two Vantages, making this a collaborative effort between the manufacturer and ABATE.
Shriners Hospitals for Children in Portland is part of the world's largest specialty care hospital system providing one of a kind care for one of kind kids for nearly 85 years. PRC Receives Pillar AwardPrentke Romich Company has been named a winner of a 2007 Pillar Award for Community Service. The Pillar Awards, presented by Medical Mutual and Smart Business Magazine, honor companies in Northeastern Ohio that positively impact others through charitable works throughout the region. PRC was given this award for the 40 for 40 program, in which 40 devices were given to individuals who lacked funding assistance and would have otherwise not been able to obtain a communication aid. All 2007 Pillar Award winners, along with their contributions, will be featured in the December issue of Smart Business. To review the 40 for 40 program selections, click here. PRC Celebrates ESOP MonthThe employee-owners of Prentke Romich celebrated their ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) by participating in company wide activities. This year, for the 3rd annual cook-off challenge, all cooks were to prepare an appetizer and/or dessert of their choice. The proceeds of the contest were donated in the name of PRC to the Viola Startzman Free Clinic in Wooster, Ohio. The clinic serves the health care and medicinal needs of our community's lower-income uninsured residents. With over $200 being raised for this wonderful cause, PRC employee-owners were pleased to find another way to help individuals throughout our community.
Another fun (and cozy!) activity was a special treat for all employees. On October 31st, employee-owners had the luxury of wearing their pajamas to work! While the extra comfort of the day resulted in added productivity, employees were delighted for some down time at lunch and enjoyed a pizza party.
