PRC Profile of Success: Tanya Backhouse
Tanya Backhouse
Tanya Backhouse is a remarkable young lady and a hero of mine.

Tanya lives in Bromley in the United Kingdom. She lives independently and employs carers (caregivers) to look after her. Tanya is currently studying on a computing course:- ICT for Practitioners at Bromley College of Further and Higher Education.

I am submitting Tanya as a nominee for Profile of Success, because of her determination, patience and her great sense of humour.

Tanya overcame many obstacles to obtain her flat and be able to live independently. She was told she could not do it, but Tanya's determination won through.

Tanya received her first AAC device in 1993 through Nash Residential College. She purchased the Pathfinder herself in 2002. Now, with the Pathfinder to aid in her communication, she is able to have an independent life. She says, "If I can get people to do what I want done, I am independent!" Tanya must have her Pathfinder to be able to instruct her carers. Tanya qualified as a Platinum Ambassador and was able to help new users of the device.

Tanya's future goal is to continue with her education to allow her to gain employment. She is working hard to gain merits to allow her to study at the next level and so far is on track. She intends to live her life to the full!

Tanya's Pathfinder is her most important piece of equipment! The Pathfinder allows Tanya to communicate her needs and, just as importantly, allows us to interact with Tanya. She makes us laugh a lot! Without that communication we would not have received the joy that she brings to our lives.

Tanya is a hero in every sense of the word. She is a great role model and inspiration to all of us. She is always positive. She is amazing. She encourages all of us to have fun. She has her flat and a van for her carers to drive her out and about. Her hobbies and interests include bowling, going to the cinema, shopping, going to the pub, ice-skating, and eating out. Tanya enjoys travel and last year went to South Africa for Christmas.
