Accessing Social Networking Through SGDs and AAC Apps on iDevices
Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Presenter: Jill Tullman
Historically, technology options have been limited for individuals who have complex communication needs and use AAC. As technology changes and increases, so are options for these individuals. AAC device manufacturers, companies developing AAC applications for iDevices, clinicians, individuals who use AAC technology and family members are looking to technology to provide easier access to numerous things, including social networking activities. While we, as a society, are still establishing norms around technology, this is both an ideal and an interesting time to be supporting individuals who have complex communication needs and use AAC. This presentation uses case studies to demonstrate how teens and young adults use and can use generating devices and/or AAC applications on iDevices to participate in social networking activities.

Using eReader Technology for Language Therapy
Time: 3:30pm to 4:30pm
Presenter: Jane Odom, Market Product Exploration Team/Director of Implementation Resources, Prentke Romich Company
No one can argue that technology is everywhere. No one can argue that our students are drawn to technology. Something about having things come to life on a screen can be mesmerizing. So, when looking for ways to motivate children to read, why not meet them where their interests lie. In this session we will look at a project we did with a variety of students excited about literacy. We also used this time to teach the children to use their AAC systems through literacy and technology. We found this to be a great way to systematically teach the use of their AAC systems in ways that held their attention.

Other areas that will be presented include different implementation strategies used with the client to teach vocabulary utilization of the vocabulary builder feature, how the teachers and parents were supported by the speech pathologist, how the curriculum and medical necessity needs were met and how issues with the device were managed. Videos of the student and instructor will also be shown to display the student’s progress.
