Language for Beginners
Who can learn language with an AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) device?
- People who have difficulty with the development of normal speech production.
- People who are not developing language normally.
Does using an AAC device mean "giving up on speech"?
- No.
- People who are learning to communicate use a variety of modes for communication, including facial expression, changes in muscle tone, gestures, vocalization, and word approximations.
- Adding augmentative communication simply adds one more technique to the modes that already exist and only enhances the communication that a person is already using.
How do you decide where to start a beginning communicator?
- Be optimistic.
- Start where there is the most potential for growth.
- Don't let the perception of limited ability limit the client's opportunities.
