Groups of literate individuals

  • People who were born with a disability, such as cerebral palsy, but learned to read and spell.
  • Individuals whose disability occurred later in life. The disability may be progressive, such as with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS), muscular dystrophy, or Parkinson's Disease.
Types of language solutions
  • Symbol-based vocabulary - results in a faster rate of communication.
  • Text-based vocabulary
    • Requires literacy skills.
    • Faster to learn.
    • May be better for those who fatigue easily.
