Javier Chavez
Javier lives with mom and sister in Kern County, California. He studies math at the Bakersfield College and works part time in Assistive Technology Information and Referral at the Independent Living Center of Kern County. Javier volunteers at the Kern Assistive Technology Center (KATC), assisting and supporting others to become more independent. Due to Javier’s cerebral palsy, his speech is not fully understandable. His previous Liberator, and now the Pathfinder, have helped him a lot especially for public speaking, obtaining job skills, and when using Speakerphone. Javier now uses Unity® 128 and previously used Word Strategy™. Both programs have been instrumental in helping him convey novel ideas and expressions. Javier is the founder and leader of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Support Group called, Chatting With Power. The aim of the support group is to challenge users of AAC to use their devices in the community to communicate with people. Javier wants this support group to grow because he likes to help others. Any AAC user is welcome to attend, but he has also had people who support AAC users attend as well. Javier uses his communication device to tell people about the group. He interfaces his Pathfinder with his computer to correspond, to send out notices/flyers, e-mails, and to access AAC resources. Javier integrates many systems of communication and is a positive role model for those who are fortunate enough to meet him. He offers encouragement and optimism while placing the highest regard on the need for individual expression. Javier’s greatest strength is his caring spirit and giving nature. Spending time with family and friends and writing poems are some of the things Javier loves best. He has also attended the Pittsburgh Employment Conference and attends national conferences as a PRC Ambassador. Submitted by Aaron Markovits, Kern Assistive Technology Center Director
