Bernie Harris
Bernie Harris is an AAC user and hero to all who meet him. Bernie is a 53-year-old gentleman with cerebral palsy and a Pathfinder-user. Bernie began using communication devices 15 years ago after meeting and becoming friends with Mary K Drudge. She was the speech-language pathologist who, along with his church, helped him acquire the Liberator, which was his first device. Bernie, in his own words, is a “computer geek” and quickly learned how to access his computer through his communication device, which made his computer more accessible and his work much quicker. Bernie is employed by Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio and is responsible for data entry, signs, and many miscellaneous computer jobs there. Bernie writes many short stories and poems with his Pathfinder. He also utilized his Pathfinder to speak at the memorial service for his friend and speech therapist, Mary K, after she passed away. Bernie is dependent on others for many physical and daily needs; however, he is a very strong-willed thinker and doer. He finds ways to overcome the physical dilemmas to lead a fulfilling life. Bernie has been to Ecuador four times, each time communicating with his AAC device and a letter/phrase board he uses. He has participated in marathons in New York and has visited Florida. Bernie advocates for himself. He knows his AAC device better than I do and he will let me know if I am wrong. He knows what he needs for his Pathfinder to be compatible with the computer and how to use it to his advantage. Bernie uses a head stick to access his Pathfinder through direct selection, which is something he has used for the length of his device history. Bernie did eventually try the Tracker head pointing system, but advocated for himself to have his head stick back, which is the best method of activation for him. Bernie is an inspiration to everyone he meets. Although he has not “taught” anyone one-on-one to use a device, just talking with him and seeing the power he has through his device is inspiring. I cannot imagine Bernie without his device and what it has done for him. It truly provides him with the ability to achieve to his fullest potential. Bernie is an inspiration to me. Because of Bernie, I want to learn more about AAC and spread that knowledge to others who are trying so hard to overcome at least a portion of their disabilities, just to help them have a voice. He is a Hero of AAC to me, to all who meet him, and especially to the memory of his friend and original teacher, Mary K.
