Brendan Hauer Brendan was awarded a Vanguard Plus. Brendan’s diagnosis is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy with resulting Anoxic Brain Injury, Aphonia, Dysarthria, Spastic Quadraplegia. At age 11, Brendan loved playing soccer, baseball, riding his bike and hanging around with his friends. Brendan was playing on the school playground at recess and suffered a major cardiac arrest. He spent the next six months in intensive care. The cardiac arrest resulted in a severe anoxic brain injury.
Brendan is a friendly and happy young man who enjoys social interactions and events. Brendan’s father writes: Brendan is the middle of three boys. Before this accident he was very active, outgoing, and well liked by his peers. This has been a very difficult time and adjustment for Brendan and our whole family. I think that not being able to communicate has to be one of the most frustrating aspects, especially for him and his brothers and friends. We are so thankful for the Vanguard device and our hope is that Brendan will find a way to use it so that he does not feel so left out and frustrated as he has retained his cognitive abilities but is so limited by his physical abilities. Thank you again, The Hauer Family
